How far can we trust on the various acne treatment products

I was a victim of acne on my body and face with pimples and boils had a terrific time fighting them in my late twenties even. My friends used to tell me that there is not much use of going for all these products that you get on the stands in the store and one of them even suggested to go plastic surgery on the face which I readily refused.
